Why we started
We’ve seen the box more than once. A shelf, a drawer, sometimes an actual shoebox: photographs with no names on the back, letters in handwriting only one person in the family could still read, a discharge certificate nobody’s opened since it arrived. Everyone means to go through it. Most people don’t, until there’s a reason: a funeral, a move, a grandchild asking a question no one still living can answer.
Scanning the box doesn’t solve this. A hard drive of four thousand photographs is still a box, just a lighter one. Someone still has to know which town that is, why the date on the letter doesn’t match the date on the passport, what year your grandmother stopped going by the name on her birth certificate. That’s research, not filing, and research like that has always been slow and expensive: a ghostwritten biography running $5,000 to $15,000 or more, a genealogist billed at $100 to $300 an hour, with no guarantee either one finishes the job.
Family Memoir started because that math didn’t work for most families, not because the story mattered less to them. The whole story, not just the files, shouldn’t be a luxury good.
